Tired of Being Hot This Summer? Cool Down With a New A/C

As was often the case for those living in this region, they didn’t have air conditioning until finally tiring of being hot this summer. Finally taking action, they had a new A/C unit installed this week and are now enjoying its comfort.

As temperatures heat up across the nation, those without air conditioning are struggling to survive – an issue affecting not just poor and working class people but also more middle class ones such as Portland Oregon where temperatures topped 100 last weekend; or Boston where an official heat emergency was declared; where high temperatures are altering their lifestyles and altering daily lives.

Heat waves in Seattle-area have upended decades of pride in our temperate climate, raising serious questions about its future in an ever-warmer planet. Soaring temperatures have also challenged many residents’ self-image who once considered purchasing air conditioners as sign of weakness.

Becky Lichenstein of Seattle-area has long embraced a local custom: living without air conditioning. She believed this decision would keep them and their family comfortable during those few weeks when the heat arrives; but this year has proved otherwise.

Ms. Lichenstein had grown increasingly tired of operating her portable air-conditioner in Seattle’s scorching, prolonged and frequent heat wave; so this week she made plans to have a permanent system installed instead.

Seattle area home heating and cooling companies have seen record sales this summer, as homeowners look to upgrade outdated systems with more energy-efficient ones. Jamey Stephens of Evergreen Home Heating and Energy noted a spike in calls from homeowners looking to install air conditioning – his company is booked until August! Furthermore, home improvement stores have sold off smaller window units while online sales continue at record levels.

Many homeowners do not realize that their current air conditioners may not be adequate to the temperatures in their house, causing it to work harder than it should and be less effective than could be. A residential air-conditioning unit typically designed for cooling a home 20 degrees below its outside temperature – meaning if your house temperatures reach 90 when only 80 are outside, this system is performing at its maximum potential under these circumstances.

Finally! It’s about time people realized the importance of having air conditioning. I can’t believe some still consider it a sign of weakness. It’s simply about living comfortably, especially during these extreme heat waves.

Totally agree, Theresa. The resistance to air conditioning is outdated and illogical. People deserve to have a comfortable living environment, and if that means getting an A/C unit, then so be it.

I find it ironic how people would rather suffer through the heat than be perceived as ‘weak’ for getting air conditioning. It’s time to let go of that mindset and prioritize personal well-being.

It’s alarming to see the impact of these heat waves on regions that have traditionally not needed air conditioning. The changing climate is forcing people to reconsider their attitudes towards cooling systems, and it’s a significant shift in societal norms.

I’m not convinced that air conditioning is necessary. People have lived without it for so long, why the sudden urgency to install it now? I think there are other, more environmentally friendly ways to deal with the heat.

I understand your point, Oliver, but the extreme heat waves we’ve been experiencing are not something people can just adapt to. The safety and comfort of individuals should be the priority, and if air conditioning can provide that, then it’s a valid solution.

This is great news! It’s about time people take action to make their homes more comfortable during the summer. The heat can be unbearable, and having an A/C unit can make a big difference in quality of life.

I don’t understand why people were so resistant to getting air conditioning in the first place. It’s not a sign of weakness, it’s just common sense to want to be comfortable in your own home.
